Goals from Clare Shine, Ciara McNamara and Saoirse Noonan were enough for Cork City Women’s FC to beat Peamount United and progress to the semi-finals of the Continental Tyre’s FAI Women’s Senior Cup in a tight encounter at Bishopstown on Saturday.
City got off to the ideal start as Clare Shine scored a great goal with a shot from outside the box which beat Peamount goalkeeper Naoisha McAloon in the 4th minute. City almost doubled their lead shortly after as Saoirse Noonan played in Danielle Sheehy on the right but her effort on goal went just over the bar. Peamount had a great chance to level the scores in the 14th minute but the City defence scrambled it to safety.
There was some good work from Saoirse Noonan as she made a great run from midfield to set herself up to shoot from the edge of the box which McAloon just palmed to the left of the goal. City doubled their lead from the resulting corner as it found its way to Ciara McNamara who tucked it away for her first goal for Cork City Women’s FC.
Peamount got themselves back into the game as Sarah McKevitt played in Amber Barrett who beat City keeper Amanda Budden to make it 2-1 in the 25th minute. They almost equalised shortly after as the ball found its way to Barrett who was free on the left side of the penalty area but her effort went just wide of the goal.
Saoirse Noonan had two efforts to restore City’s two goal advantage before the end of the first half as she again made space for herself to get a shot from the edge of the box in the 34th minute but her effort was just wide of the goal. She had another effort in the 40th minute from a City corner but she couldn’t keep her effort on target and the first half finished 2-1.
Noonan gave City an ideal start to the second half as she got on the end of a City free kick to put it away from close range and make it 3-1. Clare Shine almost made it four near the hour mark as she had an effort from inside the box but couldn’t keep her effort on target. She again had a decent effort a few minutes later as a Meghan Bourque free kick near the corner flag found Danielle Sheehy on the far post, she headed it back into the centre of the penalty area to Shine but she couldn’t keep her effort on target as it went over the bar.
Peamount set up a tense finish to the game as they pulled a goal back in the 75th minute as Heather Payne scored a great goal straight into the top left corner from the edge of the penalty area. This set up Peamount to have most of the possession for the remainder of the game and they nearly brought the game to extra time as Amber Barrett got around Amanda Budden but put her effort just wide of the goal as it finished 3-2 and City progress to the Semi Finals.
City’s next game is September 30th as they host Kilkenny United at Bishopstown with a 5.00pm kick off.
