Cork City WFC suffered a defeat on Wednesday evening 2nd of August as UCD Waves won by 5-0 in the Continental Tyre’s Women’s National League.

UCD began the game on top putting pressure on the City defence with a series of corners and a shot from distance which was well saved by Amanda Budden. City had a chance to take the lead when Clare Shine had an effort which was saved by Erica Turner.

UCD continued to have the advantage in possession putting pressure on the City defence. They came close in the 28th minute when Orla Nolan had a shot from the edge of the box which went just over the crossbar. In the 37th minute Amanda Budden pulled off a fingertip save to keep the sides level.

UCD’s pressure finally told as the first half was coming to a close, in the 40th minute as City failed to clear a UCD corner, the ball came to Karen Duggan who put it away to give them a 1-0 lead going into half time.

UCD started the second half in an ideal fashion as Duggan got her second with a volley from distance which beat Budden to make it 2-0 to UCD. City started to get into the match with the best chance for City coming in the 52nd minute, a good team move from City saw Shine have a shot from the edge of the box which was saved by Turner

Tara O’Gorman replaced Ciara Desmond on the hour mark and Maggie Duncliffe had a free kick midway in the UCD half which went wide of the goal. The game was effectively ended as a contest on the 67th minute when a defensive mistake inside the City box gave UCD a penalty which Aine O’Gorman.

While City brought on Ann Lehmann for Stacey Paul and Courtney O’Keefe for Danielle Burke to try and get back into the game they rarely tested the UCD goalkeeper with their best chance coming on the 72nd minute Clare Shine and Saoirse Noonan combined to get the ball to Christina Dring at the edge of the box who forced Erica Turner in the UCD goal to save it.

UCD finished the game in style as Aine O’Gorman scored two goals in swift succession first in the 85th minute as a UCD counter attack set her loose on her own and beat Budden. She repeated the trick two minutes later to complete her hat-trick as she again beat the offside trap and finished from close range.
